Thousands of Internet Services Unavailable Following Amazon AWS outage

Many popular internet services rely on AWS cloud services.

Update (4:11 PM PST):
Amazon indicated that they have successfully resolved the issue with underlying network infrastructure that caused today’s outage. Furthermore, they have restored service to EC2 and Dynamo DB for their US1 datacenter in Virginia, which is what caused most of the symptoms today. There are still a handful of issues that Amazon is addressing related to specific services, however our customers are indicating to us that they can now use services that were unavailable earlier today, and our internal staff are no longer impacted by issues related to this outage.

“Alexa, are you ok?”

End users around the globe are calling their respective help desks today reporting issues with popular internet services, including streaming services, Amazon’s Alexa, Ring, and Kindle devices, and many well known iPhone and Android Apps. Users who attempted to console themselves with a cheeseburger found that the McDonalds app is also unavailable.

Here at Datapath, we are having issues authenticating to some core services because of the outage, which is creating challenges for our service team as they attempt to troubleshoot related issues with customers.

Datapath CEO David Darmstandler remarked that “We understand how difficult and frustrating outages are for you and your organization. This outage is impacting thousands of services globally and we're engaging with Amazon to monitor the status of a resolution. We are here for you and your team, and have been reaching out via phone to give statuses and make users aware of the wide-spread impact."

We do not yet know the cause of this outage, though AWS released the following statement:

"We are experiencing API and console issues in the US-EAST-1 Region. We have identified root cause and we are actively working towards recovery. This issue is affecting the global console landing page, which is also hosted in US-EAST-1. Customers may be able to access region-specific consoles going to https://console.aws.amazon.com/. So, to access the US-WEST-2 console, try https://us-west-2.console.aws.amazon.com/"

An updated status page indicates that Amazon Connect (N. Virginia) has degraded contact handling, that Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud have increased API error rates, and that the AWS Management Console and Support Center have increased error rates.

We are continuing to monitor this issue and will relay additional information as it becomes available.
